Add Windows 2012R2 server to single suffix domain

There are times when there are issues joining a 2012 server to a domain with a single suffix. Below is a solution that you can implement to overcome this issue:

PROBLEM: windows 2012r2 can’t join domain
RESOLUTION:

Following were the registry changes we had to make on the 2012 R2 machine.

Registry Configuration: (this will force the name resolution dispute for the NETBIOS name and the single-label domain)

1. Create a dword value as AllowSingleLabelDnsDomain under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters and set the value to 1
2. Create a dword value as UpdateTopLevelDomainZones under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DnsCache\Parameters and set the value to 1.
3. Create dword value as UpdateTopLevelDomainZones under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\ DNSClient
4. Created dword UpdateTopLevelDomainZones under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DnsCache
