moving citrix xenserver guest

if you need to move a guest windows server from citrix/xenserver you will notice you keep getting blue screens. this is whether you use disk2vhd or vmware converter. the machine does boot into safe mode so here is the fix:

1. Boot the device in the safe mode. (or assign the vhd(x) to the system).

2. run the regedit (run the regedit on the host machine and load the system hive from the assigned disk)

3. Set Start=4 for the following keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\xenbus
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\xendisk
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\xenfilt
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\xeniface
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\xenlite
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\xennet
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\xensvc
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\xenvbd
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\xenvif

4. Delete “UpperFilters” (=XENFILT) in the keys: (sometimes all of these are not there so just delete the ones that are)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E97D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

5. close the regedit (unload hive, close the regedit, unassign the virtual disk)

6. Boot the VM in the Normal mode
